Severe Weather - Supercell Intercept - Research Vehicle - 2023

2011 Toyota Prius | Tornado Intercepts & Research Program

From 2019 to 2023. SWS scout vehicle, the 2011 Toyota Prius records 150+ tornado intercepts including 15 direct zero meter tornado intercepts in 2023 alone. The scout car achieved 20+ research mission success recording scientific data inside tornadoes.

2024 and beyond: SWS will be testing a 2018 Gen 4 model Prius. The 2011 Toyota Prius hits almost 270,000 miles. This vehicle still in service for continued severe weather intercepts for 2023. Pending for use in 2024 until service check in this winter determines reliability. The search for another Gen 3 Prius, a proven car of choice will be possibly used again into 2024 and beyond.

PRIUS INTERCEPT SPECIALISTS: SWS Prius Crew, John Hallen and Lloy Baumeister test proven results the Toyota Prius in all hazards of severe weather including rotating supercells with tornadoes. The chosen SWS scout car is equipped with all safety gear, and preparation gear to survive in the most extreme weather phenomenon on planet earth!

HIGHLIGHTS: Since 2019, the 2011 Prius has documented over 30,000+ miles per year in the Great Plains, Dixie Alley, and the Midwest intercepting supercell storms that go tornadic, recording data, and focusing on direct tornado intercepts. This Prius has been in documenting range of over 150 tornadoes. Besides the tornadoes, this 2011 Prius has experienced high wind with torrential rain mixed for a duration of miles. The car displays excellent control, safe drivable manners in extreme wind conditions. The Prius has special front to rear balance with optimum weight distribution. The cars aerodynamic shape accents the cars balance mannerisms. The car is fitted with premium rain tread tires. With that said, the optimum grab on pavement with above noted characteristics, make for long duration travel in all severe weather situations manageable.

PRIUS'S REGULAR APPEARANCES - ATTENDANCE WITH SPECIAL TEAMS: The Prius is a regular on the scene in natures most dangerous severe weather with Extreme Meteorologist Reed Timmer, John Has been part of the team supporting Reed and crew on hundreds of severe weather events since 2009. This 2011 Prius has been in damage surveys with severe weather damage assessment specialist Tim Marshall. Special Teams included with ABC News personality Dallas Raines. Since 2012, John Hallen has host ABC senior meteorologist Dallas in direct tornadic supercell storm intercepts for years. Johns' coverage has aired nationwide on ABC networks.

		Prius Maintanance: SWS Prius is always maintained meticulously. Special treated windows to protect the cars passengers in the event of hail in close proximaty of tornadic storms. John has this car in mountain driving conditions of the Rockies, Sierras, and Pikes peak region with large amounts of snowfall Since 2010 John has logged over 100K winter miles in Toyota Prius Gen 2 and Gen 3 models.
