The Tornado Season of 2010
From April to the final chase to date August 30th and 31st.Combined chases are May 10 to 11th.. June and July were daul month marathon chases.. June 1 to 15 had (13) chase days in multiple states. July 4 to 15 had (7) chases.. some into the northern Plains territory of North Dakota, Minnesota and back to Kansas to Colorado. The August 30th to 31st chase in South Dakota to southwest Iowa is the last chase to date. *All chase times noted are from initiation to final stages.
Southeast Kansas is target for the first severe weather of the tornado season 4-6. SWS Team member John Hallen geta a good storm in Emporia, Kansas.
Results: 2 major supercells intercepted. no hail.. wall cloud.. 4 hour chase.
Storms intercepted in Northeast Colorado and Southwest Nebraska 4-13. SWS Team gets probes into close range tornadic circulation and amazing structure with gustnadoes. From Julesburg Colorado to almost North Platte, Nebraska.
Results: 2 supercells intercepted. 1 inch hail.. 3 strong spinning gustnadoes.. multiple funnels.. 5 hour chase. 3 Probes fired in tornadic lowering circulation by launch cannon.
Tornado warned supercell in Vega, Texas 4-21. SWS Team storm chasing/search and rescue dogs first 2010 chase in a storm with great rotation and structure.
Under the rotation in west of Washington, Kansas 4-29. Spot on placement by John Hallen gets close range tornadic circulation and a tornado in the only tornado warned cell of this day. It appeared to be Concordia.. then the cell just fell apart. A speedy jaunt up to Washington, KS. The sweet spot it was.
Results: 2 major supercells intercepted. no hail.. 1 tornadoes.. 2 hour chase.
A chaotic chase in the Ozarks. Southwest Missouri, near Rolla 4-30. In a dangerous and visibility impaired terrain, John Hallen finds a tornado and rain wrapped danger. Started in the northern part of Missouri. With minimal instability.. the southern part of the state was the target. Late initiation.. but great storms on the clear view spots.
Results: 3 major supercells intercepted. no hail.. 2 tornadoes.. 4 hour chase.
A dangerous chase in Oklahoma May 10.. and amazing structure 5-11. High speed storm motion make a tough chase May 10th.. The Red Rock cell to the south shows some excellent rotation and extreme hail. May 11th was a relaxed day of amazing structure.
Results 5-10: 2 major supercells intercepted. 4-5 inch hail.. 1 poss rain-wrapped tornado.. right under the lowering funnel.. 1.5 hour chase.
Storm Chase Marathon from June 3rd to June 14th. The chase series started off with a direct hit from a tornado in Nebraska.. then the marathon continues. From Colorado to the central/northern Plains vicinity. Some great upslope surprises from the Palmer Divide and Cheyenne Ridge.
Marathon Chase Results: Dozens of major supercells intercepted. 2-3 inch hail.. Chase vehicle stuck by lightning 3 times.. multiple gustnadoes.. 90mph straight-line winds.. 12-14 tornadoes.. 12 chase days. Probe Cannon launches probes on 2 days.. June 10th and 11th.
Storm Chase Marathon from July 4th to July 15th. One of the strongest severe storms of the year on July 4th.. then July 6.. July 10th. Then 4 more chases.. off to Nebraska.. North Dakota/Minnesota.. Minnesota/Wisconson.. back to Southeast Colorado 7-15.
Marathon Chase Results: dozens of supercells intercepted. 2-4 inch hail.. 8-10 tornadoes.. 7 chase days.
Storm Chase Days of August 30th to 31st.. Strong tornadic storms intercepted on both days from initiation to final stages. Amazing structure. Exclusive late summer chase in South Dakota the 30th.. and into southern Iowa northern Missouri the 31st. Superior positioning yields good photogenic results.
Results 8-30: 2 major supercells intercepted. 1-2 inch hail.. Multiple funnels.. 2 tornadoes.. 4 hour chase.

These 3 storm intercepts are the winter chases. Southern California had some rare severe weather, including convective systems.. multiple waterspouts. tornadoes.. extreme flooding.. and large waves battering the coast. See below for the chases that were documented by SWS.

More tornadic storms hit Southern California 1-22. California has had over 8 tornado reports so far in 2010. Another stellar storm intercept by team SWS.

RESEARCH DATA IS COMPILED FOR THE FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF A BETTER EARLY WARNING SYSTEM FOR SEVERE STORMS. THE CASE STUDIES INCLUDED ARE FOR CONTINUED ON-SITE RESULTS IN THE REALIZATION OF A DETERRENT PROGRAM CONCERNING TORNADOES AND TROPICAL CYCLONES. THESE ARE ONGOING CASE REPORT/STUDIES.
