Q-1 TORNADO REPORTS FOR 2009- SIGNIFICANT SEVERE EVENTS OBSERVATIONS ONLY...

Below are the final reports and briefing for tornado outbreaks that occurred where over a dozen reports in a concentrated area occured. This page has reports for the events that SWS is continuing research on for the time period of Jan 1, until March 31 2009.

Significant Severe Event of 2-10-09

This event was the first significant tornado outbreak of 2009. The month of January had only 10 tornado reports. This southern plains " minor" tornado outbreak started out as a 4 to 5 tornado report day. As the days moved forward... it was apparent that the tornado count would rise as per SPC noted. There was an F-3 tornado reported in central north Oklahoma. Damage reports surveyed by the SPC confirmed the F-3 tornado. 2 fatalities and 25 injuries in Lone Grove Oklahoma.

Significant Severe Event of 2-18-09

This event was the second one that hit this February. Unfortunately there were 2 fatalities related to this minor outbreak in the south. Many of the tornadoes occurred after sunset, therefore created a most dangerous situation. These storms were east movers clocking speeds of 50 to 70 knots. The unfortunate part is Georgia had most of the tornadic storms well after nightfall.

Significant Severe Event of 3-8-09

This event was a moderate risk event that was a widepsread severe event. These tornadoes were hard to find in the field for chasers that were trying to intercept them. A significant tornado count for an early severe event. Fast moving cells were speeding east at over 50 miles per hour.

Significant Severe Event of 3-23-09

This event was really widespread. The SPC issued a moderate rating on this one. The event was mostly a widespread MCS high precipitation event with some large hail. It did not produce significant strong tornadoes, although the tornado count was reasonably high. They were spread in a large geographic area.

Significant Severe Event of 3-25-09

This event was the first significant severe tornado outbreak of the southern states for 2009. Mississippi got the mass of the twisters. There were 24 injuries related to the tornado outbreak. There were 10 more reports the following day in the same region.

Significant Severe Event of 3-28-09

This event was another spotty significant severe tornado outbreak of the southern states. North Carolina and northwest Florida got the mass of the twisters in a concentrated area.

There were 177 preliminary tornado reports for the first quarter of 2009. This count will drop as the final tally is evaluated by the SPC. In comparison to the same period of 2008, there were 360 final reports. Q-1, 2009 was a low tornao count from the previous 5 years average.
